SPSA Surgical and Dental Mission to Borongan, Samar , Jan . 21-27, 2024.
SPSA conducted a successful surgical and dental mission in Borongan, Samar Jan. 21-27, 2024 . Representative Marcelino Libanan of Eastern Samar invited SPSA to conduct a medical mission in Eastern Samar. Congressman Libanan could not physically attend the mission since the Congress was in active session in Manila. SPSA surgical mission Co-Chairmen Dr. Rolly Mendiola , a Samar native and Dr. Ed Barcelona coordinated with Marian Libanan- Guanzon and staff the logistics of the medical mission.
The medical missionaries were picked up at Tacloban airport by the staff of Congressman Libanan and transported to Borongan, Samar by 2 Eastern Samar State University coasters . It was a scenic 3-hour bus ride passing by San Juanito Bridge to Borongan City.
Dr. Jessica Sabalberino, Chief of Clinics of Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital and Surgeon Dr. Albino Bandoy coordinated with SPSA regarding the screening of patients, the conduct of the surgical and dental mission and the support of the ESPH medical , nursing, dental staff and support services.
SPSA surgeons Doctors Rolly Mendiola, Ed Barcelona, Carl Calica, Pacing Dorado, Jimmie Belen, Rey and Marlene Cordero did major and minor surgery at Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital.
Dr. Owen Loh and Dr. Katrina Gomez Bangaoet operated on the cleft lift patients and Chinese general surgeons Dr. Robert Sy and Dr. Nelson Lim performed minor surgery. Dr. Ann Kangleon-Mendiola, a general surgeon from Tacloban during a surgical rotation and coverage in ESPH assisted SPSA and provided post-op care for our patients which came from different municipalities of Eastern Samar.
Anesthesia services were provided by Dr. Ed Navarro, Dr. Steph Santos of St. Luke’s, Dr. April Gomez of Baguio General, Dr. Connie Regacho of California and Dr. Cely Alido-Guzman, a native of Borongan. The local anesthesiologists also assisted.
Manila-based dentists Dr. T.J Enriquez, Dr. Michael Bacani, Dr. Michael Zapson and Dr. Spencer Sowy performed the dental consultation and dental procedures at ESPH dental OPD clinic. Dr. Gil Bejar, ESPH dentist assisted the visiting dental team.
Dacia Valentine ORT and Darla Leggett came from Texas to join the mission. Nurse Mabel Fiel drove from Calbayog to also join the mission.
Alice Barcelona, Carmina Custodio and Mabel Fiel assisted in surgery. SPSA auxiliary Thelma Mendiola, Ludy Dorado and Nerie Bellen provided the logistical support.
Dr. Rolly Mendiola gave a CME lecture on Laparoscopic Surgery to the hospital staff of ESPH.$
Our host, Congessman Libanan and his staff sponsored an appreciation dinner in Guiuan, Samar, a surfing destination for the SPSA team at the conclusion of the medical mission. We thank the good Lord for giving SPSA the opportunity to serve the people of Eastern Samar.
