Minutes of Zoom meeting of Rural Surgical Outreach Program, Aug. 16, 2025
Zoom meeting presided by Dr. Beda Espineda
Attendees:
SPSA- Doctors Philip Chua, Ed Barcelona, Hernan Reyes, Rolly Mendiola, Johnny Montero, Honorio Cruz
PCS- Doctors Tagayonan, Ramon Inso
Agenda:
1. Dr. Robert Chacon presented statistics on the variety and number of cases done by Dr. Cortes (GS) and Dr. Patriarca(Anesthesia) in Irosin District Hospital , Sorsogon.
2. Dr. Montero reiterated his request to consider Tandag, Surigao Del Sur as a possible site of the Rural Surgical Outreach Program.
3. Dr. Espineda expressed the difficulty of PCS in recruiting surgeons for the Outreach Program because they make more working as locum tenens in the Philippines.
4. Dr. Hernan Reyes suggested the possibility of Dr. Rolly Mendiola introducing and assisting the laparoscopic surgery program in provincial hospitals. Dr. Mendiola expressed his views regarding the bidding process for laparoscopic instruments in private and public hospitals in the Philippines.
5. Dr. Inso mentioned that attending physicians and resident staff are currently performing surgery for charity patients at Our Lady of Peace Hospital in Paranaque which was adopted by the World Surgical Foundation. This could be another venue for SPSA support.
5. Dr. Philip Chua mentioned that the future direction of the rural surgical outreach program will be discussed in the next SPSA zoom meeting.
