Philip S. Chua, MD, FACS, FPCS, is Cardiac Surgeon Emeritus in Northwest Indiana, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Philippines College of Surgeons, and the International College of Surgeons.

In September of 1972, he started his thoracic-cardiovascular private practice in Northwest Indiana, about 5 miles south of Chicago. A year later, he established the Cardiovascular Surgery Associates, which later grew into a 4-man private practice corporation.

In 2001, Philip retired from his Indiana practice to aid his wife Farida Quiambao Isip-Chua, who had retired from her pediatric practice in 2000, to undergo back surgery. Farida recovered fully and Philip resumed his activities, shuttling to Cebu City, Philippines, every other month, as Chairman of Cardiac Surgery at the Cebu Cardiovascular Center at the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital, which he and his Indiana heart team helped established in 1996. He retired from this position December 31, 2010 after a 14-year stint to concentrate on his newspaper writings and his volunteer work as Chairman of the Filipino United Network – USA, a 501(c)(3) advocacy foundation in the United States for good governance in the Philippines.

Philip was Vice-President for the Far East of the Cardiovascular Hospitals of America (CHA), a hospital builder based in Wichita, Kansas, from July 5, 2004 to December 31, 2008. CHA, inspired by Philip’s idea, had planned to build an American Hospital in Cebu, a state-of-the-art medical tourism center, with cutting-edge technology, accredited by JCI, which would honor Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and attract expatriates and foreigners to visit the Philippines for more affordable quality medical care and/or to retire in the country.

Philip trained at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas, under the world-renowned heart transplant surgeon, Dr. Denton A. Cooley. In 1972, he was elected President of the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society, an exclusive professional association of more than 800 cardiac surgeons from over 50 countries around the world, who trained under Dr. Cooley at the Texas Heart Institute. The DACCSS holds international meetings annually.

Philip and Farida have five children who are all physicians, and four of them married to physicians as well. In June 2008, Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Willy Gaa, presented the PEACE Family Award to this family of eleven physicians for excellence, distinction, and achievement.
